Flashback Friday-Anime’s That Inspired Me When I Was A Wee Tater Tot

Happy Friday my pandas!

I hope everyone had a lovely day. I worked pretty much all afternoon and evening, but I am home now cooking up a delicious meal for me to devour…because I’m a little piglet. *Oink oink*

Since today is Flashback Friday I thought I would go over some anime I used to watch as a wee tater tot. Maybe give you guys a little inspo on why they have a special place in my blackened heart. These are the anime’s that really kicked off my obsession with Japanese animation and Japanese culture. Here I am 20 years later! Heavily involved in anime and anything that might be related to it. I guess sometimes things just stick with you no matter how old you get. I hope anime stays with me my entire adult life. I don’t wanna grow up! *Throws self on floor and rolls around excessively*

I kick things off with my love for Sailor Moon. Fun fact: I have seen all the anime but I have not read any of the manga. Please don’t kill me! *Hides under covers* My interest in Sailor Moon started around when I was 6 or 7. I can’t really remember the exact age I was when I first discovered Sailor Moon, but I am 99.9% sure that’s the time frame. Eh…lets just go with that for now.

I love love love the fact that Sailor Moon doesn’t solely focus on romance. It is a mix of everything. From being your own hero, to friendship, to forgiveness and even overcoming everyday life obstacles like getting good grades, cooking, and growing up. Things that young girls (and guys) can really look up to. Sailor Moon was my favorite anime as a kid. I totally wanted to be a Sailor Scout when I grew up. Forget being a Disney Princess! Give me those kick ass transformation scenes!

My next venture was of course Pokemon and Digimon! 1997 was the peak of Pokemon coming to America and Digimon being released in the summer. They were the coolest things to come out since Tamagotchi’s release in 1996. And man oh man did I love my little virtual pet.

As I look back on the release of Pokemon and Digimon I have come to the conclusion that I love Digimon just a little bit more. Pokemon is more iconic in the sense that you see it everywhere and anywhere, but the concept of Digimon was a bit more unique. I liked that the Digimon could digivolve and then revert back to their original state. Unlike Pokemon, where once it was evolved that was it. It’s crazy how much Pokemon and Digimon have changed over the last century. Pokemon is still ongoing and Digimon got rebooted into a new series. I love the new Digimon series! It is so much fun seeing the old cast back together. These two shows will always resonate with me ❤

New digimon

Next up is the infamous CardCaptor Sakura! I remember having a set of the Clow Cards thinking I was like the coolest kid ever. I even pretended I could read my brother’s fortune with them…haha. What was I thinking?! I don’t even know XD

But I loved CardCaptor Sakura mainly because of Sakura’s costumes and how cool the cards were. I was OBSESSED with the Windy card and the Light & Dark card. I thought the character designs were stunning! I was like…why can’t I be that pretty? Oh that’s right…this is real life. duh. In anime all the characters are usually beautiful and perfect.

Also…can I say I AM SO EFFING PUMPED FOR THE NEW SERIES?! I CAN’T FREAKING WAIT! 2018 can’t get here soon enough!

Cute CC

Now here is one anime that not a lot of people talk about…Monster Rancher. It wasn’t super popular like the others but it sure was neat. I liked the premise behind it and I was also in love with Tiger (because he was a bad ass wolf with horns). I remember getting the Monster Rancher game for the very first PlayStation and playing that game for hours on end. I couldn’t be stopped! Muahaha. I also didn’t have very many friends. What a loser I was. Tehehe.

I also had a plushie of Suezo that I won out of a claw machine and that thing went with me everywhere. Mocchi was pretty adorable too.

Another lesser known anime that was kick ass was Zoids! I mean…who doesn’t like giant animal robots?! I think they need to reboot this show. Mecha anime does quite well in this day and age. Look at Gurren Lagann or Gundam Wing (this series got a reboot) or even Schwarzmarken (such an awesome show)! I thought it was pretty cool that Zoids got a model-kit toy line.

I didn’t watch all of this series but most of the episodes have stuck in my mind. Just the big ass robots fighting and how sweet they looked.

Essentially there are a TON of other anime’s that came out in the 1990’s, but these are the ones I remember watching the most. I occasionally watched Dragonball with my brother and even some episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh! but they weren’t my favorite. I want to know which shows you watched! Which were your favorites and why do you love them? Let me know in the comment section.

  1. I pretty much saw all of these anime growing up too, except for Digimon. Inever really cared for it. But Cardcaptor Sakura is a big fave of mine. The rain card is my fave! I liked it mostly for the design as well. Tsubasa Chronicles totally ruined Sakura though, making her a pathetic damsel.
I loved Monster Rancher too. The big discs the monsters came from always fascinate me, and seeing them die can be tragic.
Zoids was a big part of Toonami, but I actually watched Crush Gear Turbo more. It was also a show promoting toys, but it has a soft spot for me.

    1. I feel like a lot of people just couldn’t get into Digimon mainly because they saw Pokemon first, which is totally understandable. I totally get it. Do you think the new revamp of CardCaptors is going to do better? The trailer looked pretty amazing! It got me hyped. I think Monster Rancher and Zoids were pretty damn unique. I wouldn’t be mad if they rebooted them both 🙂

      1. I honestly do not have much trust for the new Sakura, but I am cautiously hopeful. I want it to be great, but recent revamps aren’t often satisfying. The D Gray Man revamp broke my heart.
The trailer of the new Sakura looks awesome though. Seeing her in HD makesme feel old.
