I guess you could considered these anime’s to be hidden gem series or even shows you may not have heard of on the regularly scheduled seasons. Some of these shows I found while actually researching more “popular” or “mainstream” series. Sometimes you find some really cool things! Other times you enter the dark abyss of the interwebs. I have seen some things my pandas. AVERT YOUR EYES! ABORT MISSION! CLICK THE BACK BUTTON AS FAST AS YOU CAN!
None the less I have found some worthy anime that need to be brought to your attention. These shows definitely need more wuvs! I guess you can say this Top Ten Tuesday is inspired by the lovely people of Crunchyroll over on YouTube. They have a little segment called Q Review. Every week on Q Review Crunchyroll tries to convince you to watch an anime that may be sitting in your queue. This could also be used in context with Hulu, Netflixs, or whatever other platform you may be using to watch anime. I’ll leave a link for a Q Review here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGHOoQHlWTc. Check it out and see what I am talking about!
Let’s get on with this party shall we!?
1. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (2 Seasons)
This anime right here. Yes, this one right here is a fucking MASTERPIECE! I don’t know how many times I have tried to get people to watch this anime because it is that good. I was disappointed it got lost in the mix of winter premier 2016. It got overshadowed by a lot of other anime and I wish it got more attention. NO, IT DESERVES MORE ATTENTION! The story-line, the characters, the music, the whole god damn thing is so WORTHY and BEAUTIFUL! This anime takes #2 on my top 10 anime list of all time. Now, if you do decided to watch this I want you to know that this anime is a bit on the slower side. It has a 40 minute opening episode and builds from there. So please please please just keep that in mind before saying it is not interesting or whatever. It is so much more than that! You will understand once you get a few episodes in. And don’t even get me started on the second season! Man oh man! It wraps up everything up so god damn PERFECTLY! Studio Deen you did such an amazing job with this show! Arigato ❤
“Yotarou is a former yakuza member fresh out of prison and fixated on just one thing: rather than return to a life of crime, the young man aspires to take to the stage of Rakugo, a traditional Japanese form of comedic storytelling. Inspired during his incarceration by the performance of distinguished practitioner Yakumo Yuurakutei, he sets his mind on meeting the man who changed his life. After hearing Yotarou’s desperate appeal for his mentorship, Yakumo is left with no choice but to accept his very first apprentice.
As he eagerly begins his training, Yotarou meets Konatsu, an abrasive young woman who has been under Yakumo’s care ever since her beloved father Sukeroku Yuurakutei, another prolific Rakugo performer, passed away. Through her hidden passion, Yotarou is drawn to Sukeroku’s unique style of Rakugo despite learning under contrasting techniques. Upon seeing this, old memories and feelings return to Yakumo who reminisces about a much earlier time when he made a promise with his greatest rival.
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is a story set in both the past and present, depicting the art of Rakugo, the relationships it creates, and the lives and hearts of those dedicated to keeping the unique form of storytelling alive.”
2. Youjo Senki (Saga of Tanya the Evil)
I am not a huge fan of military based stories/movies, but I couldn’t help but gush over Youjo Senki (Saga of Tanya the Evil). This is a more recent anime; it premiered for winter 2017. It got some press/hype but not as much as it totally deserves. With the mix of crazy battle scenes, blood, and story-line Youjo Senki became easily my favorite pick for the winter season. I am so HYPED for season two since the first season ended on a cliffhanger. I know studios are REALLY into making people wait for the next season or even the next episode (if the series is airing weekly). But what makes this show really fucking epic is Tanya! Tanya…so cute and smart and a TOTAL FUCKING BAD ASS YANDERE. Yeah…she sold this anime for me after episode one! Just go watch it. You will totally understand what I mean. Tehehe.
“Tanya Degurechaff is a young soldier infamous for predatorial-like ruthlessness and an uncanny, tactical aptitude, earning her the nickname of the “Devil of the Rhine.” Underneath her innocuous appearance, however, lies the soul of a man who challenged Being X, the self-proclaimed God, to a battle of wits—which resulted in him being reincarnated as a little girl into a world of magical warfare. Hellbent on defiance, Tanya resolves to ascend the ranks of her country’s military as it slowly plunges into world war, with only Being X proving to be the strongest obstacle in recreating the peaceful life she once knew. But her perceptive actions and combat initiative have an unintended side effect: propelling the mighty Empire into becoming one of the most powerful nations in mankind’s history.”
3. Junketsu no Maria (Maria the Virgin Witch)
Junketsu no Maria (Maria the Virgin Witch) is a fun light-hearted anime. It also has some great comedy aspects to it! I thought it had the perfect balance of fantasy/magic with a touch of pervy-ness and historical drama. You will understand once you meet Artemis in the show! If you are looking for something that is easy going then I would suggest this or even the show Flying Witch. It is another anime that is slice of life and just plain cute! I am down with anything that has witches in it!
“Maria is a powerful young witch living with her two familiars in medieval France during the Hundred Years’ War against England. As the war rages on and the innocent get caught in its destruction, Maria becomes fed up with the situation and begins using her magic to try and prevent further conflict in hopes of maintaining peace. However, her constant intervention soon attracts the attention of the heavens, and the archangel Michael is sent to keep her from meddling in human affairs. The divine being confronts Maria, and he forbids her from using her powers, issuing a decree that her magic will be taken if she loses her virginity. Though she is now labeled a heretic, Maria adamantly refuses to heed Michael’s warning and continues to disrupt the war between the two nations. But as the Church begins plotting to take away the witch’s power and put a stop to Maria’s interference once and for all, her peacemaking may soon come to an end.”
4. Dantalian no Shoka (The Mystic Archives of Dantalian)
This is one of those anime’s I found on a whim and I am SO glad I did! I had no idea about this anime at all until it popped up one night on a google image search I was doing. After that I went right on over to watch it and I binged it in a single night. I love the historical fantasy of Dantalian no Shoka and the imagery in this anime was SUPERBER! You can’t go wrong with a good mystery/fantasy anime!
“Six months ago, Lord Hugh Anthony Disward, also known as Huey, lost his eccentric grandfather, Sir Wesley Disward, who was a renowned collector of rare books. His grandfather’s will states that, in order to inherit his manor and everything inside it, he must take guardianship over the Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian—an archive that contains forbidden knowledge—and also take care of a mysterious girl called Dalian.
As Huey settles into the manor, an old rival of his grandfather’s arranges a meeting with him. Dalian, knowing the rival to be Wesley’s killer, tags along and discovers that the murderer is in possession of a Phantom Book—a cursed tome that Wesley tried to seal away. When the book puts the two in danger, Huey discovers that the Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian and Dalian are one and the same, and she entrusts Huey with the key to unlocking the knowledge stored within her. Together, Dalian and Huey seal the book away, and thus begins an unlikely partnership as they solve mysteries caused by other Phantom Books.”
I remember starting C3 and then for whatever reason I went off on a different tangent. Maybe I had other shows to watch or I didn’t know what to make of the first episode…but whatever the case I eventually went back and finished it! I love this anime (mainly because of Fear…that ever adorable and moody loli you see pictured above) and because of its supernatural/horror vibes. It doesn’t get the highest rating (probably because of the ecchi aspects) but I totally jelled with this anime. I guess I am easy to please sometimes 😉
“From the light novel series written by Minase Hazuki, comes a story of love, action, and comedy. Yachi Haruaki is a high school boy who is naturally resistant to curses. After his father sends him a mysterious black cube, Haruaki awakes to find a nude girl named Fear standing in his kitchen. She’s the human form of the cursed black cube – and an instrument of torture! Utilizing her special abilities, Fear fights alongside Haruaki to defeat other cursed instruments and their owners.”
6. Hitsugi no Chaika (Chaika -The Coffin Princess-)
If you want a mix of everything; from action, to fantasy, to romance, with a bit of violence and profanity mixed in then Hitsugi no Chaika (Chaika -The Coffin Princess-) is just the anime for you! Personally, I love any anime that has fantasy and magic in it. That is largely due to me being an avid reader. I was always drawn into fantasy worlds through reading, so it is no wonder I love fantasy anime. I think the plot for this anime is also right up to par! It doesn’t disappoint it terms of action or comedy. There are some really good laughs that come along with this one!
“For 500 years, the Taboo Emperor, Arthur Gaz, ruled the Gaz Empire with an iron fist and conducted inhumane experiments on his own people. But his reign came to an end five years ago, when mighty warriors—later known as the Eight Heroes—defeated him in a battle for the capital. His death ended the 300-yearlong war between the Gaz Empire and the alliance of six nations.
In the present day, Tooru Acura is a former saboteur from the war who has difficulty settling into the peaceful world, as he cannot find a job where he can put his fighting skills to use. An opportunity appears before him, however, when he meets a white-haired Wizard named Chaika Trabant. With a coffin on her back, she is searching for the scattered remains of her father in order to give him a proper burial, and she hires Tooru and his adoptive sister Akari to help her. However, the six nations alliance, which have now formed the Council of Six Nations, dispatches Albéric Gillette and his men from the Kleeman Agency to pursue and apprehend the late Emperor Gaz’s daughter—Chaika.
With the shocking revelation of Chaika’s identity, the Acura siblings must choose between helping her gather the remains of the tyrannical emperor and upholding the peace the continent strives to maintain.”
With great kill scenes, an bad ass character team, and a real life story-line to boot, Jormungand is one anime you DO NOT want to pass up! This anime takes on the story of international arms dealers (which is a very real thing) and children who are forced to use these weapons to kill people (another real thing that happens overseas). I fucking love this anime so much! It is another recommendation I tell my friends to watch all the time. This along with the anime Gangsta, because that anime kills as well! Both have very similar aspects if you look at them closely enough. But, yes! This is one you should watch right now actually. Shoo, shoo! Go on!
“Brought up in a conflict-ridden environment, child soldier Jonathan “Jonah” Mar hates weapons and those who deal them. But when Koko Hekmatyar, an international arms dealer, takes on Jonah as one of her bodyguards, he has little choice but to take up arms. Along with Koko’s other bodyguards, composed mostly of former special-ops soldiers, Jonah is now tasked with protecting Koko and her overly idealistic goal of world peace from the countless dangers that come from her line of work.
Jormungand follows Koko, Jonah, and the rest of crew as they travel the world selling weapons under the international shipping company HCLI. As Koko’s work is illegal under international law, she is forced to constantly sidestep both local and international authorities while doing business with armies, private militaries, and militias. With the CIA always hot on her trail, and assassins around every corner, Jonah and the crew must guard Koko and her dream of world peace with their lives or die trying.”
8. Yosuga no Sora: In Solitude, Where We Are Least Alone
WARNING: This anime is for a mature viewing audience ONLY! It is rated R+ for mild nudity. I also do not recommend this anime for anyone who does not like ecchi or the whole brother/sister love complex.
But if you don’t mind any of those (like myself…because I’m a perv), then I think you will enjoy this anime. It follows two twins who come back to their home town and all of their memories of that said town. It mainly focuses on Haruka (the brother) and his different relationships with all of the girl’s he has made friends with. I think each girl gets 3 episodes each? You know…where it revolves around different relationships/choices Haruka can make with each girl. That type of anime.
“Haruka and Sora Kasugano are coming home, to a place filled with memories.
Having lost their parents in a tragic car accident, the twins resolve to return to the countryside and start life anew at their grandfather’s house, the haunt a constant reminder of moments from their past. Greeting them are childhood friends Nao Yorihime and Akira Amatsume, and newcomer Kazuha Migiwa. It is a warm welcome, symbolic of the days that should come.
Their peace is merely ephemeral, however, as suppressed emotions, born from vows both newfound and forgotten, start exerting their influence on the twins’ new lives. And deep down, a dark secret, only known to them, begins to unshackle.
Based on the visual novel by Sphere, Yosuga no Sora not only explores the power of lost memories and true love when the bonds of many become intertwined, but also raises the questions of morality and social acceptance.”
9. Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru (Beautiful Bones: Sakurako’s Investigation)
I love me a good mystery! I mean who doesn’t these days?! That is what Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru (Beautiful Bones: Sakurako’s Investigation) brings us! A mystery/thriller with adult underlying themes. This anime is also rated R+ for violence and profanity. Right up my alley! I really dig this anime because it kept the viewer guessing. You were trying to figure out the investigations right along with Sakurako and Shoutarou. It is an anime that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I didn’t want this anime to end! I would love to see more of this show.
“When Shoutarou Tatewaki first meets Sakurako Kujou, he knows his life will never be the same. Initially believing her to be responsible for a disappearance in the neighborhood, he later learns of her true talent: analyzing bone specimens. Sakurako has quite the collection of reconstructed animal bones, but she wishes she had more of the human variety, much to the chagrin of those around her.
Soon, Shoutarou begins accompanying the eccentric osteologist on the many different unsolved cases she comes across—usually in the form of decomposing bodies. But with so many incidents happening around them, could there be a larger mystery at work in their lives?
Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru is a story of two unlikely partners, each showing in their own way that bones can tell how one died, but only people can tell how they lived.”
10. Mahoutsukai no Yome: Hoshi Matsu Hito (The Ancient Magus’ Bride)
The full anime for this show comes out in October of this year, but we do have two episodes already released. One was released in October of 2016 and the other was released in March of this year. I cannot wait for the full version of this anime! Everyone says the manga is AMAZING and from the two episodes alone I am HOOKED! This anime has a very dark theme to it but also some stunning fantasy/magic aspects to it. Wit Studios is back at it again with Mahoutsukai no Yome: Hoshi Matsu Hito (The Ancient Magus’ Bride). I know this anime will be phenomenal!
“Chise Hatori has lived a life full of neglect and abuse, devoid of anything resembling love. Far from the warmth of family, she has had her share of troubles and pitfalls. Just when all hope seems lost, a fateful encounter awaits her. When a man with the head of a beast, wielding strange powers, obtains her through a slave auction, Chise’s life will never be the same again.
The man is a “magus,” a sorcerer of great power, who decides to free Chise from the bonds of captivity. The magus then makes a bold statement: Chise will become his apprentice—and his bride!”
Have you seen any of the anime I mentioned above? If so what are your thoughts/opinions of them? If not which ones will you be adding to your watch list? I would love to hear from you in the comments section down below! 🙂
