Oh look it’s Friday my pandas!
We made it through another week. How do we do it sometimes? Oooo…I know! With lots of coffee and probably no sleep. Yeah right! I love sleep and naps. My sleep schedule might be jacked but I still go to sleep at a fairly decent hour. *Cough* 2 am *Cough*
I stay up pretty late due to my work. I’m a medical courier and we deliver packages at all times of the day. I mainly work later afternoons and evenings. Hence, why I’m up so late at night. It is pretty similar to my old job but I don’t have to get up at 3, 4, or 5 am anymore! Thank goodness! I hated that SOOOO much…but the money was REALLY nice (the only good thing about that job).
Enough about my personal life (you guys don’t wanna hear about that). You guys are here for animus! Well…twin-tail girls to be exact.
Twin-tails, also known as pigtails, piggytails, handlebars or hair drills, is when the hair is tied up into two distinct sections. See picture below for reference:
(Aoba-chan from the anime New Game!)
Girlish twin-tails (pigtails) is considered a type of “TV trope.” Most of the time twin-tails are used in order to give a visual clue that the character is young or immature. This type of hairstyle is said to have come from the Chinese custom of unmarried women wearing their hair in two buns on either side of their head, much like Usagi from Sailor Moon. Usagi has a combination of the two (buns on top of her head adorning into twin-tails).
(Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon)
If an older women is trying to disguise her age in an anime you can expect her to adorn the “twin-tails” look. This can also be a key factor in her personality/temperament: playful, fun, and possibly innocent. If the character is evil then this may also indicate that she is a “psychopathic woman-child” to some degree. An example of a “psychopathic woman-child” would be Yuno Gasai from Mirai Nikki (The Future Diary).

I’m gonna quote a little information from my friend’s over at http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GirlishPigtails. Just so you guys get a better understanding of twin-tails on “yandere” characters.
“Pigtails are commonly found on Tsundere’s, either full pigtails or a variation (“Tsundere Tails”), which leaves the majority of the hair down with tails on each side of the head. This may be to indicate her childish temperament: prone to physically expressing displeasure and temper tantrums; or to symbolize her dual nature (tsun-tsun/dere-dere).
Twin-tails can also be combined with regal ringlets, in which case they’re indicative of both high social status and youth, perhaps suggesting the wearer is a spoiled child. When the tails are impossibly huge and curled, then it’s mega twin-tails, which indicates a compromise between femininity and tomboyishness.”
An example of the regal ringlets would be Claire Harvey from the anime Hundred:
For me personally, I have always liked the twin-tails hairstyle in anime. I prefer long hair on anime girls/women, but twin-tails come in second for me. I even did a short “anime women’s hairstyle” poll on my Twitter the other day (don’t forget to come follow me https://twitter.com/paperpandabears) and you guys also agreed “long hair” was the best. I’ve come to the realization that A LOT of my favorite female anime characters have twin-tails though.
This post isn’t here to pick favorites (maybe it is…because twin-tails ARE best girl), but more so to showcase the different hairstyles in anime. I think all girl’s can rock any type of hairstyle, from short and sassy to long and elegant. It just comes down to the anime character (her personality, style, if she goes through personal growth in the show, etc). I enjoy anime shows that give different hairstyles throughout the show as well. Us humans living in the real world change our hair from day to day depending on our mood, so why not show that in anime as well? I find it quite annoying when anime characters wear the same clothes over and over again. WEARING THE SAME OUTFIT DAY IN AND DAY OUT IS NOT HOW REAL LIFE WORKS PRODUCERS! Get it together will you! XD
Which female anime hairstyle is your favorite? Do you prefer long, short, or middle-length hair? Fun fact: I’m actually trying to grow my hair out super long because of anime. I want to have kawaii hairstyles in real life too! I’m also obsessed with anime girls that have large bows in their hair. They are TOTES ADORBS! ❤
