Time to break out the handcuffs and prison jumpsuits (cause we may be going to jail for this Senpai Saturday)…cause the Loli’s have arrived!
I’m serious guys…we MAY actually get in trouble for this post.
Eh…guess I’ll have to take my chances! Welcome back to another Senpai Saturday with yours truly. Ayachan is here to bring you knowledge in all things Lolicon. You guys voted (via Twitter) which otaku/anime term you wanted me to talk about next and Lolicon was the WINNER. Ding ding ding!
Also I apologize that I missed last weeks Senpai Saturday. I was doing something…but I can’t remember what? Oh well. I’m here to make up for that mishap now! Hopefully the Loli’s will ease your troubled souls. They tend to be quite good at making you feel things…if you know what I mean. Aye 😉 (If you don’t hear from me after this then I’m a prisoner of the justice system. PLEASE SEND HALP)
“Loli refers to the Japanese discourse or media pertaining to the attraction of young looking cute girls that blend slightly erotic characteristics to form this intriguing sub-culture. Loli culture can be seen in various forms from advertisements, manga, and anime genre.”
I feel like Loli is almost an umbrella term and many things can fit under the “Loli” category. Generally speaking the characteristics of a “Loli” involve big doll-like eyes with a small rounded face and a small frame. Hence, why “Loli’s” look young in nature. The term “Loli” usually refers to a girl who is very young and comes from an elementary school background, but there are also “Loli’s” who look childlike but are over the 18+ threshold.
Then we have the term “Lolicon.” A “Lolicon” is someone who has a sexual attraction/fixation on young underage girls. This is where some confusion may come in. Some people refer the term “Lolicon” to being a pedophile. As my good friend over at http://blog.honeyfeed.fm/what-is-loli/ states:
“Loli focus most of their life on the more youthful aspects of life, but do so in a very adorable and innocent manner much like a child would. Lolicon focuses more on the actual psychological impulses that an individual has in seeking someone who displays such behaviors to become involved in a relationship, etc.”
And as my trusty friend over on Wikipedia states:
“Laws have been enacted in various countries, including in Japan, which regulate explicit content featuring children or childlike characters. Parent and citizens groups in Japan have organized to work toward stronger controls and stricter laws governing lolicon manga and other similar media. Studies of lolicon fans state that they are attracted to an aesthetic of cuteness rather than the age of the characters, and that collecting lolicon represents a disconnect from society.”
I don’t think you’re necessarily a “pedophile” if you have a thing for “loli’s.” I think it all comes down to whether or not you act on these “sexual impulses.” The Anime Man (AKA Joey-senpai) interviewed Okayado, the creator of Monster Musume, in December of last year and I felt like they covered this type of topic pretty well. You can view the interview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBuxgFEcvKg. Japan is known for having many different sub-cultures that only make up a small percentage of the Japanese infrastructure. For example Loli’s, Lolita’s, Harajuku Girl’s, Gyaru’s, Kogal’s, etc etc. Many of these sub-cultures focus on the fashion aspects of one’s personal life. You can also refer to these terms as “Street Fashion.”
Personally, I like “Loli” characters. I think they are cute and add an element of fun to certain anime/manga. Am I sexually attracted to them? No. Well…Maybe Maria from Shinmai Maou no Keiyakusha but she is considered to be an older loli. Sometimes I think loli’s are overrated but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy them! I prefer my anime ladies to be a little bit older though! 😛 And I don’t think loli’s will be going ANYWHERE anytime soon! They are WAAAYYY too popular amongst anime fans.
Sometimes you just like what you like with no particular reason at all. I like anime girl’s with pink hair simply because I think they are “best girl.” As I stated yesterday I like anime girls who wear big ribbons in their hair. Don’t know why but I just do. If you like loli’s simply because you find them cute or even partially attractive then whose to say you can’t like them? I say FUCK ‘EM! Keep on keeping on my friends.
Which “loli” character(s) is your favorite? Do you think “loli” characters will continue to be popular in anime/manga? What are your thoughts on being a “lolicon?” Let me know down in the comments section below! 🙂
