Senpai Is Salty

Yes, Ayano-senpai is a bit salty right now.

I’m sure most of you have seen the results for this years Crunchyroll Anime Awards. We had some great nominations and some shitty results. I am completely happy that Made in Abyss won Anime of the Year. Everyone was hyped after it was announced and it definitely deserved to win…but just like last year’s Yuri!!! On Ice, Boku no Hero Academia swept most of the categories it was nominated in…which (to me) is kind of shit. Don’t get me wrong, I love Boku no Hero Academia just as much as anyone, I just didn’t think it deserved to win ALL of the categories it was nominated for.

But what I am most salty about is Mahoutsukai no Yome (The Ancient Magus’ Bride) winning Best Drama. Like really??? REALLY? Out of Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, Made in Abyss, and Kuzu no Honkai (Scum’s Wish) that is what won? For pure raw drama Mahoutsukai no Yome (The Ancient Magus’ Bride) doesn’t even come close to the other three. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu should have won that category hands down! And I may be a little biased (because I love that show oh so much) but it is literally the definition of drama. Hell, you could have even nominated Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni (In This Corner of the World)! It’s a historical drama that depicts the before and aftermath of war…perfect contender for Best Drama.

I am also disappointed that KonoSuba didn’t win Best Comedy, that gravityWall from Re:Creators wasn’t nominated for Best Opening Song (because that song is the effing best!), that A Silent Voice got beat out for Best Animation, and the fact that Boku no Hero Academia had multiple nominees in some categories when other shows didn’t. Can you say favoritism much? I know most of you guys don’t care about these type of award shows and I wouldn’t either if these people would nominate the right fucking shows. At this point I think Crunchyroll needs to let us vote for the nominees instead of them picking them out themselves. That’s why they do these award shows in the first place right? For the fans and for the possibility for people to join Crunchyroll/stream on their platform. You would think after the backlash last year they would have learned their lesson…but nooooo…they had a repeat offense.

I think Joey (The Anime Man) best describes my saltyness right now. He also gives really in depth thoughts on each category and why things should be different if Crunchyroll is going to continue doing these award shows. It’s a long video but totally worth the watch! I’ll link it down below:

Sorry for the rant but I felt like I needed to say something or my mind was going to explode! On a more positive note I went to an Asian market today with my roommate and I got a ton of Japanese snacks to try (I may have tried some of them already XD). I took photos of what I bought and I will be posting about them tomorrow. Hopefully you guys enjoy these foodie post! I think it is fun to blog about other things related to Japan beside anime.

And feel free to comment your thoughts about the award results down below! I’m all ears to see what everyone else thinks.

  1. Haha..rant all you want. It’s something that pretty much happens every time with awards. (Look at the Oscars for instance). I can’t really judge as I haven’t seen all the series, but it’s always annoying when something wins, while there is something much better suited for that particular category.

    1. Honestly I wasn’t even this salty last year lol mainly because the awards were just introduced but now that we see how things go I thought this time around might be better. Boy was I wrong! It just sucks that the most hyped shows get all the attention when there are far better lesser known shows that deserve just as much recognition if not more. Everyone loves jumping on the band wagon I guess XD

  2. Yeah: that usually is the case with these awards type of things. The popular shows always get picked first instead of highly underrated lesser known shows. Perhaps we should hold our own awards show here on wordpress? 😀

  3. I was also a little surprised The Ancient Magus’ Bride won best drama. As much as I enjoyed the first half of it, I wouldn’t have classified as a drama and I wouldn’t say it was the best one out there.
That said, I learned last year not to expect all that much from these other than a popular outpouring and in that regard, they still kind of missed the mark by the extended time over which this whole process has dragged. Most of us have well and truly moved on from last year by the time they’ve gone through nomination announcements, opening voting (staggered release for what reason?) and then finally announced winners. It all needs to happen much faster given the limited attention span of most of us.

    1. Yes! I completely agree with you. I know we talked about this a few times and it was frustrating that they broke up the voting like that. Idk…you would think they would have a better strategy going into this or at least a team working on this “award section.” Like Joey states in his video I hope they refine it and actually add in the right anime shows to each section because The Ancient Magus’ Bride is definitely not the best suited anime for drama.

  4. I didn’t even think The Ancient Magus’ Bride could be classifies as a drama before this. I don’t really pay much attention to Crunchyroll awards but isn’t is largely fan voted? Things like that always happen with popularity polls. I was more surprised Made In Abyss won best anime award since My Hero Academia has so many fans.
