Always Make Your Heart a Rainbow: We’ve Got a Very Colorful P.R.I.D.E Interview With Biblio Nyan!

We are in the final two days of PRIDE month! I’m sad to see that June will be coming to an end, but I’m fortunate enough to bring you guys a very special interview with Biblio Nyan. Yes! You heard that right. Biblio has graced me with her presence and this wonderful interview. I couldn’t be more blessed to have her on my blog. HALLELUJER LORD BABY JESUS. It is like an angel has come down from heaven and given me eternal life.

I also did another PRIDE post on Tuesday. I was able to share some of my personal experiences with being bi-sexual, as well as listing off some anime characters that share the same sexuality as me. If you missed that post and want to check it out all you have to do is click here:

I hope everyone has been enjoying their summer thus far! Luckily, Oregon hasn’t gotten too hot as of late. I’m expecting it to heat up in the months of July and August though. Reeeaaally not looking forward to the heat…ugh…is it fall yet?! I am so ready for cooler days, colorful leaves, pumpkin spice everything and Halloween. Halloween is my favorite holiday if you guys couldn’t guess XD Y’all should know this by now if you have been following me since last year! Who else feels the same way???

Alright…enough of the complaining and personal chit chat. You guys are here for Nyan! I promise you we’ve got some juicy stuff…so keep on reading!

1. What part of the LGBTQAI do you fall under?

Nyan: I identify as a gender neutral, biromantic, asexual.

2. Which LGBT anime/manga character has made an impact on your life and how so?

Nyan: He’s more of a minor character in the series, but I love Hatsuhoru Sohma from Fruits Basket. He identities as bisexual. No one makes a big deal of this; it’s just a natural part of life, which I always appreciated. He’s also really cool. He made a big impact on my life because I had never experienced such a natural reaction to being into people who were the same sex as me. It was always either a hush-hush thing that was never talked about, or it was like Hell had frozen over. But whenever I read about Hatsuharu’s interest in Yuki as being an accepted norm, it kind of blows my mind. I also really related to Envy from FMA/FMAB. They are gender neutral and are never referred to as a boy or a girl, just a person (or a monster given context of the anime). Their gender is never a big deal. Them being GN (Gender Neutral) is also very natural and an accepted part of the show. It was the first time I had seen a GN character treated like that and it made me accept myself in my own skin for the first time.

3. Do you watch/read any yaoi, yuri or both? If so, what are some of your favorites?

Nyan: I haven’t read much yaoi or yuri. I have an interest in it, but a lot of them tend to portray abusive relationships (at least the super hyped ones that most people talk about and enjoy), which I don’t care for. One yuri series I really loved was Girlfriends. It’s legit about a couple girls who are friends that develop romantic feelings for one another. I like how genuine it is.

4. What are some of your favorite things about the LGBTQAI community?

Nyan: Acceptance. While there are some struggles here and there, I see it as my family. I can be myself and am accepted by most for who I am as an individual. As I mentioned, sometimes there’s strife, but what family doesn’t have a bit of strife? I think that we are all fighting for equality and the right to be accepted as humans and people, and at the end of the day, that is what matters the most. If the LGBTQIA+ community didn’t exist, I don’t know that I would either. The support from the community makes me want to fight and keep on living.

5. Do you share a personal relationship(s) with someone in the LGBTQAI community?

Nyan: Yes! My partner is a trans woman.

6. If you could couple any two anime characters who would they be?

Nyan: Mikasa and Annie from Attack on Titan…to be a bit cliched lol I love fierce women and they are so amazing in that sense. Also, Keisuke Takahashi and Takumi Fujiwara from Initial D. Their passion for racing as well as their differences in their personalities would compliment one anther rather well.

7.  Do you think the LGBTQAI community is represented enough in anime/manga or would you like to see more representation?

Nyan: I think some parts of the community have good representation, particularly where gay people are involved. We have yaoi and yuri genres, while they aren’t always super accurate I think there are tons of gems out there that do offer good representation. However, I think other parts are severely lacking. Such as asexual’s. I honestly can’t recall a lot of anime/manga…if any…and I haven’t encountered them yet aside from Sailor Moon that has positive asexual representation in a main character. There are also limited serials that portray diverse gender identities in main characters positively, or without being ridiculously flamboyant or exaggerated. So, I think there needs to be more positive and healthy focus on the other lesser known members. Most of the time we are left out in media representation.

8. If you could give someone who is struggling with their self-identity any advice what would it be?

Nyan: Oh, this one’s a bit tough. I help a lot of people comes to terms with their identities and learn to accept and adapt to their environments, particularly with younger people. The one thing that is always relevant no matter what the situation is, is that death and self-loathing are not options that will help you…like EVER. Your identity is valid and real. It doesn’t make you a freak or a mistake. It is a big part of who you are as an individual and the best way to confront the struggles that come with ignorance that you are faced with is to accept yourself with confidence. Sometimes it’s difficult. You will have good days with the bad, and some of those difficulties will test your very core, but that acceptance will liberate you. It will allow you to do what is best for you and your future.

9. If you could create an LGBT based anime or manga what would you want the story to revolve around?

Nyan: I think would center mine around a person who comes to realize that they are a gender neutral asexual who then must tackle the obstacles that come with that realization. Specifically, within a family or community where their identity is not seen with much acceptance akin to many Asian cultures/communities. Seeing the character undergo these struggles is something that I think many people will be able to relate to. Instead of a bittersweet or sad ending, I would like to end it with a lesson of acceptance from those who would normally deny your identity is possible. I would want the show to depict ignorance being changed into compassion/acceptance, as it’s something that we need more representation of. Acceptance of differences stemming from educating those who are uninformed/uneducated in understanding those differences. If that makes sense.

10. Which anime/manga couple do you admire the most? Please feel free to choose any sexual orientation for this one!

Nyan:  Rinko Yamato and Takeo Gouda from My Love Story!! (Ore Monogatari!!) are my absolute favorites. They are just so fucking adorable and wholeheartedly genuine. A perfect representation of a healthy relationship.

Yay! Thank you so much Nyan for letting me interview you. It was a pleasure and honor to have you featured for PRIDE month. Tis a shame June went by so quickly. I wish I would have interviewed more queer folk…guess there is always next year! Did you read any other cool and exciting PRIDE blogs during the month of June? If so, leave them in the comments section below! I would love to read them ❤

  1. I love the questions you asked, Ayano! Nyan’s answers were great too. I agree on how a lot of the most popular yaoi series are focused on abusive relationships. Lots of great names and series were mentioned here, like Hatsuharu, Mikasa and Sailor Moon. 🙂
